Little Berry Hand Pies

I love pie.

I’m always making different sorts of pies, galettes, mini pies and trying out new fillings.

So the other day, I made some little baby hand pies for my family which I’m currently staying with in Poland.

Pies are the easiest thing for me to make in Poland, because all the ingredients are readily available. Other things are harder, because there is no brown sugar here, so I really have to stick with the basics and make something somewhat Polish.

In the morning, my cousin and I walked to the market, and bought some fresh raspberries and blueberries which the little old ladies picked fresh from the forest that morning.

The raspberries were big and plump and sweet, the blueberries were small and juicy and delicious.

So we came home and I baked two different types of hand pies, with blueberries and with raspberries. I love that they are cute, that you can pick them up and eat them just like that. They’d be yummy with some whipped cream, too.


1 recipe of basic sweet pastry
2/3 cup blueberries
2 tbsp sugar
2 tsp flour
2/3 cup raspberries
2 tbsp sugar
2 tsp flour

Preheat the oven to 180 C (350 F) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Make the blueberry filling by mixing the blueberries with 2 tbsp sugar and 2 tsp flour. Make the raspberry filling in the same manner. Set aside.

Remove your pastry from the fridge and on a lightly floured surface, roll it out until it is about 2 – 3mm thick (1/8 inch).

Using a pastry cutter or an upside down glass with a 6 – 7cm (2.5 inch) diameter, cut rounds from the pastry.

Take one round of pastry and place it on the lined baking tray. Top with a teaspoon of either blueberry or raspberry filling.

Place another round of pstry over the top of the filling and press down gently around the sides. Seal the edges by pressing down with a fork and slice a small indent in the middle with a knife.

Repeat until you have used all the pastry rounds, then gather together the scrap dough and re-roll it, repeating the process until you have used all the pastry.

Bake for 30 minutes or so, until golden. Makes 20 hand pies.

    • Thanks!! Oh my gosh it’s amazing!! We’re in Berlin at the moment and all the little market stalls along the streets have the most amazing fresh fruit and berries, they smell so much better and taste so much sweeter than what we have at home :-)
