So I want to be a pastry chef, right?
And I’m pretty sure I go to culinary school, where I study patisserie. And I go to classes, where I like, bake stuff.
And last time I checked, I worked at a cupcake shop, where like five times a week, I bake stuff.
And I think I have a blog, which I bake stuff for all the time.
And I want to work in a bakery, even own my own one day, yeah? Pretty sure I’ll have to bake stuff for that, too.

Well. I am totally on the right track in life. Because I am so smart, and so amazing at baking, that I totally forgot to put the chocolate chips in the mixture for these brownies.
HOW does that even happen?!?

I was wondering why it looked like there was hardly any batter when I poured it in the pan. And I didn’t realize what I’d done then. Nope. I put the pan in the oven anyway.
It was only 7 minutes into baking, when I was looking over Maura’s photos, that I realized this thing is supposed to have chocolate chips in it. Ugh!

So I pulled the pan out of the oven quick as I could, dumped a bag of chocolate chips on it and sort of swirled them in with a knife.
This is real life, people.
Luckily for me they worked out anyway. Even though half the chips melted.

So here we have some gooey black bean brownies. WITH chocolate chips inside. Just remember to stir yours through BEFORE you put the pan in the oven. Like a normal person. Okay?

BLACK BEAN BROWNIES
Adapted from Chocolate Covered Katie via My Healthy ‘Ohana.
1 x 400g (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup quick oats or rolled oats processed fine
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup canola oil
3 tbsp cocoa
2 tbsp strong black coffee
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 cup chocolate chips
Preheat the oven to 180 C (350 F) and line an 8 x 8 inch pan with baking paper.
Put the beans in the food processor and process until smooth. Add the maple syrup and canola oil and continue to process until smooth and there are no lumps of beans left.
Add the processed oats, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, baking powder and salt and process until combined.
Stir in the chocolate chips by hand (don’t forget!).
Bake for 15 – 20 minutes, until the center is set. Allow to cool completely before cutting. Makes 16 brownies.

Your improvisational skills will serve you well as a pastry chef, I’m sure! These look delicious.
Haha thank you!
Haha! No matter how smart or accustomed to baking/cooking you are, we all make these mistakes. Sometimes I convince myself that all of my experience as a home cook is for nothing when I make a stupid mistake like adding 3/4 cup of butter instead of 3/4 a stick! It all happens, we win some, we lose some. Lets just hope we win more than we lose.
Love these brownies, by the way! I’ve always wanted to try black bean brownies ever since I saw them on 101 Cookbooks so long ago. Do they do justice to normal brownies?!
Hey Amy! I’m glad I’m not the only one that makes silly mistakes! I love your thing with the butter, 3/4 cup v 3/4 stick – haha!
They absolutely do not do justice to normal brownies in the sense that they do have a slight bean-y taste. These ones (http://butterbaking.wordpress.com/2012/08/23/walnut-chocolate-chip-bean-brownie-cake/) were probably much better in that sense. But they are great anyway! And a rich chocolate fix that you know is healthy!
And thanks
I am glad I’m not the only one who has done this! It is even worse when I measure my ingredients ahead of time and then look over and see something left on the counter that should be in the oven!!
Hahaha Maureen I love that! The fact that you already had it measured out and then forgot? Hilarious! I’m so happy to hear it’s not just me!
They look delicious, no matter about the chocolate chips! In fact, it would be great if you mixed them in, and then scattered some over top too
Thanks Maura
That’s exactly what I did! I mixed heaps in but because the batter was hot they sorta melted. Then threw some over the top too!
From a fellow baker who dreams of opening a bakery one day too, these look awesome! I can be forgetful too, but I think yours look great with the melted chips on top
I’m making these tonight. Enjoy culinary school, I had such a great time learning (and taste-tesing).
Hi! Love hearing from someone who has been to culinary school too and has the same dreams! Your blog looks awesome by the way, the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies look yum! Hope you had luck with these, let me know how you go! Thanks
Thank you! The brownies turned out great. I never eat beans (hate them) but these brownies were so fudgy and delicious. My friends and I loved them!
Oh that’s so great to hear! They are super fudgy aren’t they?! Glad they got you eating beans

I do this all the time. I think I do it more often than not… it’s really sad / pathetic.
These look so yummy and perfect but I’m still terrified of bean brownies! Scary.
Maybe if you made them for me and didn’t let me know that they were in there I’d be down with them!
Haha well I’m happy to hear it Erin!
These ones are a little tiny bit beany. More so than the other bean brownies I made. Probably because they’re all healthy and there’s no butter and sugar in there hiding the beans. So I wouldn’t make them for you, you’d totally freak.
Hahaha. Love your last sentence. And this new posting healthy stuff Natasha!
Hahah thanks
so mine is already in the oven, waiting 10 more minutes to bake then 5 minutes to cool (I can’t wait to try em) I want a healthy chocolate fix, so I hope this will do. I don’t have black beans but had adzuki beans and I dunno but I added one egg, we’ll see how this goes. btw, i forgot to add the chips too, i poured 1/5 of the batter then i remembered haha
Hahaha that last line made me laugh – amazing that you made the same mistake I did!
Hope you liked these and that they worked with your beans/the egg!
I am making these brownies – assuming you do not drain the beans? I hope not – because I am just dumping them into the food processor.
Sorry Laurie, you will need to drain and rinse the beans! Updated the recipe
Well that explains why they turned out a little mushy last time. I still enjoyed them and am making them again, but this time I will drain the beans. Thanks for updating the recipe!
Eeek sorry about that! Better luck this time!
That explains why they were a little mushy last time I made them. I am making them again today, but I will drain the beans this time. Thanks for updating the recipe!
